Sensation

What is Sensation Play?

Also known as: sensory play

Sensation play explores the body with varied physical stimuli, temperature, texture, pressure, a little pain, to heighten and focus the senses, running from feathers and ice through to wax and pinwheels.
Sensation Play

In depth

Sensation play is the broad BDSM category that plays with what the body feels, setting contrasting stimuli against each other to sharpen awareness. It reaches from soft and sensual (fur, feathers, a light touch) to sharp (ice, wax, pinwheels), often with sight removed so the rest lands harder.

How it works

The top works through a sequence of stimuli, warm then cold, soft then scratchy, usually on a restrained or blindfolded bottom whose narrowed awareness makes each sensation hit harder. The whole thing turns on contrast, anticipation and focus.

That is the definition. Doing it is a longer subject, and it has its own page: the full guide to sensation play covers practice, variations and where beginners get caught out.

Safety

Mostly low-risk, but keep an eye on temperature (test wax and ice), don't break skin unless you know edge-play safety, and keep stimuli off sensitive areas unless that's the intent. Blindfolds push the trust requirement up.

Sensation Play FAQ

What is used in sensation play?

Anything that creates an interesting feeling: feathers, fur, ice, warm wax, Wartenberg (pinwheel) wheels, textured fabric, breath, light scratching. The art is contrast and anticipation, often with the bottom blindfolded.

Is sensation play painful?

It can be anywhere from purely pleasurable to sharply intense, by choice. Much sensation play is gentle and sensual; the edge comes from contrast and surprise, and the level is negotiated.
