The Kink Negotiation Checklist (Before Any Scene)
Run a short negotiation before any scene. It covers your limits, your safe words, the health flags, and aftercare, and it’s what keeps play both consensual and predictable. The checklist below is the version I hand to people who are still getting used to doing this out loud.
This guide is scheduled and will appear once its publish date passes.
The checklist
- Activities: what’s on the menu tonight, and what’s explicitly off it.
- Hard limits: the never-do items. Soft limits: maybe, with care.
- Safe word: usually “red” for stop and “yellow” for ease off.
- Health flags: injuries, joints, triggers, anything to steer around.
- Aftercare: what each of you needs to come down safely.
- Clean-up & exit: the practicalities once you’re done.
How to actually use it
- Run it every time, briefly. With a regular partner it’s two minutes, not a formal interview. You’re only making sure nothing important goes unsaid.
- Both people answer. This is a conversation, not the top interviewing the bottom. Each of you names your own limits and needs.
- Write down the essentials. Hard limits, the safe word, and any health flags are better kept in text than in memory, especially with a partner you don’t know well yet.
Casual vs. regular partners
The checklist scales with how much trust is already there. New or casual partner: go slower, say more, verify the limits, keep the scene shorter, over-communicate on purpose. Regular partner: you’ll have built a shorthand, which is lovely, but don’t let it quietly delete the step. Bodies change. Moods change. Health changes. “We always do this” is the sentence that tends to come right before an avoidable accident.
Before you file it away
A negotiation is a plan, not a contract that outranks the moment. Anyone can call yellow to ease off or red to stop at any point, and the whole plan bends to that instantly, no explanation owed. Treat the checklist as the thing that makes spontaneity safe, rather than the thing that spoils it.

FAQ
What is scene negotiation?
It's the conversation before play where partners agree on activities, limits, safe words and aftercare, so consent is clear and specific.
